It was only one week ago. I was going to bed, like most of the nights that I watch 11 o’clock news before turning off the TV, I did the same. And that was the time when the shocking news hit me. “Shooting at Virginia school”. First they said 21 people killed. Among them were one professor and the rest students. It is that simple. In one or two sentences we can give the news of 21 people, 21 lives, “Done”! Is it really that simple? Each one of them had a life time before them. Each one may had a story worth hearing. Loves and hatreds, success and familiar and so many other things. Every one of them woke up that morning with so many plans in their minds. And here it comes, a crazy teenager, with two guns, decides to end their lives.
Virginia School Shooting Then I told to myself; what about that killer? Is it also that simple for him to do such a horrible thing? I remember a while ago I read something in a book, it is an old Chinese saying: “Society prepares the crime, the criminal only does that” Of course I don’t agree that we put the blame on society, but there is also some truth in this phrase. I’m sure every one of us had been affected by people around us; family members, close friends, lovers. I have seen that sometimes so many little things we do that we even don’t count them, would make someone so mad that they do something unexpected. Now the question is: What about the genetics? How much does that part come into play? Can we say for example: This killer had something horrible in him when he was born and then the influence of his surrounding made him react like this? And if someone else has been under the same influence, but with different genetic characteristics, may be wouldn’t have reacted like this? The answer to this question makes a lot difference in our view on criminals.
